Stressless Recliners: How to Choose the Perfect Chair for You

Stressless Recliners: How to Choose the Perfect Chair for You

With over 60 Stressless recliner configurations to choose from, finding the chair that’s right for you may seem pretty daunting at first. But don’t worry. Once you understand the various options available and how to figure out what works best for you, you can quickly narrow down your selection and find the perfect chair.

In this blog post, we’re going to help you do just that. There are no steadfast rules when it comes to choosing the right Stressless recliner. But understanding the core components of comfort outlined in this post will help you find the best chair for you and your space.

Ready? Let’s get into it…

Find the right size for you

Besides a few exceptions, every Stressless recliner comes in three different sizes – small, medium, and large. This level of customisation is rare and highly important, as finding the right fit is key if you want a chair that will give you unparalleled support and comfort. A typical question we’re usually asked is “What size chair do I need because I’m 5 foot 2 inches?” However, there’s much more to the perfect fit than just your height. Your body type, the length of your torso and other personal preferences are all important factors too.

Having helped customers pick their perfect recliners for over 15 years and listening to all their feedback, we feel confident stating the placement of lumbar support and neck/head support should be the most determining factors when picking a chair size. The depth of the seat and height of the back differ between sizes (as does the width of the chair), which changes the placement of support from one size to the next.

This is why it’s really important to test sit the different styles of chairs.

When testing a chair, sit on it, close your eyes and pay close attention to your back and neck. How do they feel? Well supported? Try the chair in both the upright and reclined position. Are both positions comfortable? Have a think about what you’ll do in the chair - like watching TV, reading, or talking on the phone - and try to mimic those activities in the chair. And don’t forget to try every size for the sake of comparison, even if you think you know your size already.

Quick tip: Have someone look at you while you’re testing out the different Stressless recliner models. Your eyes should be around the same level as the top of the chair.

Choose the perfect style

There are many styles to choose from, each with its own unique mould used to shape the foam. The level of cushioning and the way the chair actually feels will differ from style to style. So it’s important to take a seat and compare a few different styles of Stressless recliners before making your final decision.

Some chairs also have the height adjustable headrest feature, which can be necessary for taller people. Additionally, chairs can differ in size, with some running shorter or taller in the back, and some being wider or narrower. It’s possible that a medium is the right fit for you in one chair style, while a large is the right fit in another.

Finally, when you’re testing the different types of recliners available, don’t let the look of the models on the showroom floor influence your comfort decision. Every Stressless chair style is customisable, which means you can choose the upholstery, base style and finish for every chair.

Pick your base

Over the years, we’ve found the Classic, Signature and Classic Power to be the most popular base options amongst our customers. The Classic, as the name might suggest, has been available for many years. The more recent Signature and Classic Power bases have also grown in popularity and offer some exciting new features previously not available.

Classic

The Classic base has been around for decades and boasts a clean, simple Scandinavian look. It's the most affordable option but it doesn't allow for any extra movement, like rocking. But it does swivel and the footrest pivots to provide angle adjustment.

Signature

The Signature base has elegant polished aluminium accents that complement your chosen wood finish perfectly. It also has a mechanism that lets you rock gently, swivel effortlessly and also allows for a slightly deeper recline. You may notice the arm height is a bit higher on chairs with the Signature base. For some, this provides additional support and comfort. The arms are slightly angled and the seat is a bit higher too.

Classic Power

The Classic Power base is a great option for those who don't have space for a footstool. This base offers an integrated footrest controlled by discreet touch buttons on the side of the seat. This design can be great for some but the footrest’s length cannot be adjusted. However, when the footrest is detached, you can control the length by moving it closer or further away from the chair. The Classic Power base is only available for medium and large size chairs.

Finishing touches

Once you’ve taken the time to explore and try the different sizes, styles and base options, then it’s time to have some fun! By this we mean you now get to choose the leathers, fabrics and wood stains.
